Chinese Leadership Development Formation

古晋圣若瑟主教座堂、圣三堂以及圣马尔谷堂的华文青年领袖,参与了由Peter Voon博士主讲的四阶段领袖培训系列。该培训计划的宗旨是:“发现于教会中领导与服务的真实意义——自我发展、个人成长与灵性培育。”

Leaders of the Chinese Youth in Kuching from St Joseph’s Cathedral, Holy Trinity Church, and St Mark’s Church participated in a four-part “leadership training series” conducted by Dr. Peter Voon and Organised by St Mark Chinese Youth and Kuching Archdiocese Youth Commission (KAYC). The objective of the programme is for youth to “discover the authentic meaning of leading and serving in the Church – through self-development, pastoral, and spiritual growth.”

 

Peter Voon博士在战略领导、组织转型、高管教练、能力评估及人才发展等领域,拥有超过35年的丰富业界经验。

Dr. Peter Voon brings with him over 35 years of extensive industry experience in  Strategic Leadership, Organisational Transformation, Executive Coaching, Competency  Assessment, and Talent Development.

 

本次四阶段培训系列经过精心策划,透过循序渐进的四步学习旅程,引导受选的青年领袖全面发展其领导能力:

The four-part training series was thoughtfully structured to guide selected youth leaders through a progressive, four-step learning journey in leadership development:

 

第一部分:自我探索
• 青年领袖探索生命的目的与意义,更深入地认识自己的使命、热忱与圣召。
• 为期一天的课程以Fr Felix Au欧庆伟神父关于教会服务领导力的分享作为总结。

Part 1: Self-Discovery

  • Youth leaders explored the purpose and meaning of life, gaining deeper awareness of their personal mission, passion, and vocation.
  • This one-day session concluded with a sharing by Fr Felix Au on leadership in the context of ministry within the Church.

 

第二部分:关系管理
• 青年领袖学习与他人互动的艺术,并培养情绪智商,着重理解自我与社会之间的不同观点与层面。
• 为期一天的课程以Fr Lucas Ng黄天赐神父关于教会服务领导力的分享作为总结。

Part 2: Managing Relationships

  • Youth leaders learned the art of engaging with others and developing Emotional Intelligence, with emphasis on understanding perspectives from both self and society.
  • The one-day session concluded with a sharing by Fr Lucas Ng on leadership for service within the Church.

 

第三部分:“加速型”团队(Accelerated Teams)
• 青年领袖学习建立高绩效团队所需的关键要素,以及有效处理人际冲突的方法。
• 课程以Fr Delphin邓格林神父关于教会事工领导力的分享作为总结。

Part 3: “Accelerated” Teams

  • Youth leaders were equipped with essential knowledge on building high-performance teams and effective methods for resolving interpersonal conflicts.
  • The session concluded with a sharing by Fr Delphin on leadership in Church ministry.

第四部分:团队领导力

  • 这是整个培训系列的高潮阶段,一场为期两天一夜的领袖训练营在三马丹(Sematan)Roxy Townhouse 举行。
  • 训练营以一趟从圣马可堂前往三马丹的使命之旅展开,参与者分组策划并执行指定任务,包括:
    o 沿途探访三所天主教教堂,并了解各教堂的历史;
    o 探访两所天主教学校;
    o 探访一个天主教团体。

Part 4: Team Leadership

  • This final phase marked the culmination of the training series with a two-day, one-night Leadership Bootcamp held at Sematan Roxy Townhouse.
  • The bootcamp began with a Mission Trip from St Mark’s Church to Sematan, where participants worked in teams to plan and execute assigned missions, which included:
    • Visiting three Catholic churches along the journey and learning about their histories;
    • Visiting two Catholic schools;
    • Visiting one Catholic community.

 

所有小组均顺利完成使命。参与者珍惜在过程中所获得的宝贵学习经验,并透过旅途中面对的挑战,更深入了解古晋偏远地区天主教团体所面对的现实与限制。

All teams successfully completed their missions. Participants expressed deep appreciation for the valuable lessons learned through the challenges encountered during the trip, and gained greater understanding of the limitations and realities faced by Catholic communities in the more remote areas of Kuching.

 

第一天以烧烤晚宴及才艺分享活动圆满结束。
第二天则以由Fr Delphin邓格林神父主礼、并由参与的青年领袖带领礼仪与歌唱的弥撒作为开始。

Day One concluded with a BBQ dinner and an evening of talent sharing.
Day Two began with Holy Mass presided by Fr Delphin and animated by the participating youth leaders.

 

在整个训练营期间,培训内容进一步加深了参与者对促进包容与和谐,以及主持具包容性与高效会议的理解。Fr Delphin邓格林神父也在最后的分享中,勉励青年领袖欣赏并实践教会内的多元性、公平性与包容性。

Throughout the bootcamp, training sessions further strengthened participants’ understanding of promoting inclusivity and harmony, as well as facilitating inclusive and effective meetings. Fr Delphin concluded the programme with a final sharing on appreciating diversity, equity, and inclusivity within the Church.

 

总体而言,这项领袖培训系列不仅促进了来自不同堂区的华文青年团体之间的深厚联系,也为青年领袖在古晋总教区,乃至更广阔的领域中,建立强大、有效且合一的团体奠定了坚实基础。

Overall, this leadership training series not only fostered strong relationships among Chinese Youth groups from different parishes, but also laid a solid foundation for youth leaders to build strong, effective, and united communities within the Archdiocese of Kuching and beyond.

“Taking part in this Catholic Youth Leadership Development programme in Kuching was, for me, not merely an advancement in management skills, but a holistic journey of deep exploration into life’s mission and the depth of teamwork.

The programme revolved around four core themes, guiding us from self-discovery toward team leadership. Throughout the process, I came to deeply understand that excellent leadership is by no m

eans simply about administrative command, but rather flows from sincere service to others—just as the Gospel of Matthew 5:13 states: ‘In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.’

Looking ahead, I am committed to translating what I have learned into action: on a personal level, striving for a high degree of self-discipline and emotional management; on a team level, by discovering the gifts of others and fostering unity, moving from “individual excellence” toward “shared flourishing as a team.” My heartfelt thanks go to the organisers and the instructor for their dedicated planning and guidance.”

“在这一年里我参与了由圣马尔谷青年团与 KAYC 联合举办的领导能力发展课程。在这四堂课程中,有一个体验让我印象尤其深刻。

我们需要用纸巾蒙住眼睛,在完全不知情的情况下,由另一位伙伴带领着,走遍圣马尔谷教堂的四周。由于当下看不见,也不知道是谁在带领,加上对环境的不熟悉,心里难免会感到一丝害怕。随后角色互换,我也成为了带领他人的那一位。

正是在这个过程中,我深刻体会到,作为一名领导者,当你的团队需要你的引导时,你该如何让对方建立信心,与他们一起完成一件事。这不仅需要清晰的方向,更需要给予足够的安全感与信任。

在这四堂课程里,我学习到,成为一名好的领导者,首先要认识自己的优势与弱势。当我开始接纳真实的自己,并在当中不断滋养与成长,我也慢慢成为一个更好的领导者,以及更好的自己。

我也非常喜欢 Dr Peter 的教学方式。他教导我们如何与不同性格、不同类型的人有效沟通,这不仅提升了我们的社交能力,也帮助我们在工作与日常人际关系中更加成熟与自在。

最后的课程,我们一起参与了在 Lundu 举办的两天一夜营会。在那里,我学习到我们的团体虽然多元,但却有着同一个目标——彼此服务、携手同行。时刻被提醒,别只看外表而轻易判断他人。并深处了解他人的需求和优势。

“Over the past year, I participated in a leadership development programme jointly organised by the St Mark Youth Group and KAYC. Among the four sessions, one experience left a particularly deep impression on me.

We were required to blindfold ourselves with tissue paper and, without any prior knowledge, be led by another partner to walk around the surroundings of St Mark’s Church. Being unable to see, not knowing who was leading, and being unfamiliar with the environment naturally brought about a sense of fear. Later, we switched roles, and I became the one leading others.

Through this process, I deeply realised that as a leader, when your team needs your guidance, you must know how to help them build confidence and walk with them to accomplish a task together. This requires not only clear direction, but also the ability to provide a strong sense of safety and trust.

Throughout the four sessions, I learned that becoming a good leader begins with recognising one’s own strengths and weaknesses. As I started to accept my authentic self and continually nurture and grow within that space, I gradually became a better leader—and a better version of myself.

I also greatly appreciated Dr Peter’s teaching style. He taught us how to communicate effectively with people of different personalities and types. This not only enhanced our social skills, but also helped us become more mature and at ease in our work and everyday relationships.

In the final session, we took part together in a two-day, one-night camp

held in Lundu. There, I learned that although our group is diverse, we share the same goal—to serve  one another and journey together. We were constantly reminded not to judge others superficially, but to deeply understand their needs and strengths. Community life and the spirit of service are how we live out our faith in Christ.”

“感谢这次的领袖培训有Dr. Peter 还有来自其他堂区的青年 还有Fr. Lucas和Fr. Delphin 

在这几次的培训中 让我看到自己还在成为领袖的路上 作为领导者 我学习到的是 自己本身需要知道 前方的路 和做事的目的和意义 

领导者也需要 有对自己本身的认识 因为当自己都不认识自己 也更难去认识他人 带领人了

无论是在工作和服务都是一样 当然 每一个人 都有自己的个性和独特点 在蒙眼游戏里 我学习到的是 作为带领人 需要了解被带领的人 想要以怎样的方式被带领 也很需要主的智慧 去听和看懂对方的需要 这也是同理心的一部分 

此外 也在倾听青年的环节 了解每一个人对词语的定义都不同 (讲师也给予了情感上的词语如爱,失望等) 有人对爱的定义 会是一起做和完成一些事情 而有的却是 精心时刻的陪伴 最后 身为领导者 要学习耶稣的仆人式领导 

以身作则 去照顾那些有需要帮助的人 

带领他们也到天主那里 这其实就是天主要我们做的 — 若15:12 这是我的命令:你们该彼此相爱,如同我爱了你们一样。彼此学习互相代祷。主佑。” – 池采恩(圣三堂青年)

“Thankful for this leadership training with Dr. Peter, the youths from other parishes, as well as Fr. Lucas and Fr. Delphin.

Through these sessions, I realised that I am still on the journey of becoming a leader. As a leader, I learned that I must first know the road ahead, as well as the purpose and meaning behind what I do. A leader also needs self-awareness—because if you do not understand yourself, it becomes even harder to understand and lead others.

This applies equally in both work and service. Of course, everyone has their own personality and unique traits. In the blindfold activity, I learned that as a leader, it is important to understand how the person being led wishes to be guided. It also requires the Lord’s wisdom to truly listen and perceive the needs of others—this is part of empathy.

In addition, during the session where we listened to the youths, I came to understand that each person defines words differently (the instructor also introduced emotional words such as love, disappointment, and so on). For some, love means doing and accomplishing things together; for others, it means quality time and attentive companionship.

Finally, as leaders, we must learn from Jesus’ servant leadership—leading by example and caring for those in need. We are to lead them to God, for this is what God calls us to do — John 15:12: “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” Let us continue to learn from one another and pray for each other. “During the year-long course, I was probably one of the youngest in the youth group. Lacking experience, there were many unknowns to explore and experience. In this leadership course, I learned a lot of new insights, especially Emotional Intelligence.  

Being a leader isn’t just aboutleading a team; it’s also about having Emotional Intelligence

to interact with them, which is truly important to me. The leadership course experience was truly unique; I built relationships with other church youth and gained a deeper understanding of myself.”
